This devotional sculpture exemplifies the popular religiosity and sacred art of the Iberian Peninsula during the late Baroque. The Spanish-Portuguese carvings of this period are especially appreciated for the synthesis between the contained expressiveness of the Spanish imagery and the ornamental delicacy characteristic of the Portuguese workshops.
During the 18th century, the production of small-format images destined for private oratories and domestic altars intensified.
The figure presents a face of fine features, with a serene and slightly melancholic look. The carving of the eyes and mouth is subtle, seeking an intimate emotional connection with the faithful. The Virgin is crowned, emphasizing her title as Queen of Heaven.
