Dejean (1872-1953) was a sculptor of enormous institutional prestige in France, a capital figure in what was called the "Bande à Schnegg", a group of sculptors who reacted against the dramatism of Rodin seeking a return to calm and classical order. He was a professor at the School of Fine Arts in Paris and a member of the Legion of Honor. His style is situated in the "Return to Order" after the First World War, seeking ideal beauty and harmony. His female nudes are considered the pinnacle of French elegance of the 1930's. They avoid obvious eroticism to focus on purity of line and volume.
