Jose Manuel Martinez Perez graduated in Fine Arts in Seville, specializing in sculpture. From a very early age he was interested in drawing, which he practiced in a self-taught way until he began studying fine arts. There he began to model and study the classics and sculptors of the twentieth century. Until 2001 he worked in the local workshop and exhibited in Huelva and Seville. In 2002 he moved to Madrid and opened his own workshop where he still produces a large part of his work. He is represented at the MEAM (European Museum of Modern Art) in Barcelona. He has made numerous public commissions in his homeland, among which are: monument to the sailor, the elderly, the farmer, tribute to reading, among others. He has also been awarded the Antonio Gimbernat prize for excellence and medical research by the San Carlos Hospital in Madrid. He is currently an artist at the Lleid'Art Gallery, and teaches drawing at the School of Professional Drawing (ESDIP). Recent exhibitions include: Contemporary Art of the 21st Century (Permanent Collection), MEAM; AlbaArte'13; Centro Cultura Los Alamos de la Antilla de Huelva 2013; Miami River Art Fair'12; Proponendo 2011 (Javier Román Gallery), Forte dei Marmi (Italy); Fran Daurel Foundation Barcelona 2012. The torsos and sculptural busts that Martínez Pérez models seem to disintegrate and recompose at each incidence of light, filtering it through the tiny anatomical nooks and crannies. The emotional ups and downs ooze through texture and carnal torsion. The psychic interior is externalized through dense muscular tissues, in tension or distended, through longing or fainting, weightless or heavy gestures.
