DESCRIPTION

After GIAMBOLOGNA (Flanders, 1529 - Florence, 1608), XVII- XVIII centuries
"Bull".
Patinated bronze.
19th century pedestal.

Measurements: 12 x 25 x 8 cm (sculpture); 19 x 32 x 22 cm (pedestal).

This elegant "Bull", cast in bronze during the XVII - XVIII centuries, derives from a model by Giambologna, whose invention gave rise to a wide repertoire of variants spread throughout Europe since the end of the XVI century. The composition, very successful in its time, was reinterpreted by his circle and followers, especially in the circle of Antonio Susini.

The figure presents the animal in a marching attitude, with its head erect and its foreleg raised, generating a restrained rhythm that combines naturalism and stylization. Its anatomy, more slender and refined than in the first Florentine models, corresponds to one of the evolved variants of the original type, very widespread in the workshops of northern Europe during the 18th century.

Specimens related to this typology are preserved in important international collections, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, which shows the wide diffusion and critical fortune of this model.

With a careful dark patina and elegant presence, the work is presented on a nineteenth-century pedestal, constituting an attractive example of cabinet sculpture inspired by the great Mannerist models.
