This pair of carvings ascribed to the prestigious Bavarian School, embodies the technical mastery and dramatic intensity that define the German baroque sculpture. Executed with admirable meticulousness, these works present the stylistic characteristics that made Bavaria a fundamental artistic nucleus during this period, marked by a profound religious sentiment and a formal language of great expressive force.
The vestments are dynamic elements that vibrate with deep, angular and intricate folds, generating a play of chiaroscuro that enhances the theatricality of the compositions. The original polychrome, rich in meticulously stewed gilding, denotes quality and accentuates the celestial atmosphere that surrounds the sacred figures.
The expressions of the figures, with elevated gazes towards the sky and a restrained but eloquent gesture, convey a deep spirituality and intense devotion, intrinsic characteristics of the religious art of the time.
They were probably originally designed to form part of a larger architectural ensemble, such as an attic of an altarpiece or the upper part of a tabernacle.
