FÉLIX CANA (France, active at the end of the 19th century).
"Bust of a young man".
Carved marble.
Signed on the back.
Presents a metal ornament on the base.
Measurements: 65 x 37 x 23 cm.
Marble bust signed by Felix Cana, belonging to the French school and made in the context of the Belle Époque, a period of special development of the decorative arts and sculpture for refined interiors.
The sculptor's work is situated within the academic classicism and historicism, dominant trends in the sculpture of the late nineteenth century, where the idealized female figure occupies a central place. In this work, Cana develops a model of serene and timeless beauty, far from the individualized portrait and oriented to aesthetic evocation.
His skill in the treatment of marble, whose surface acquires a softened, almost carnal texture, characteristic of the aesthetics of the time, is especially noteworthy. This effect, together with the delicacy of the features and the careful work of the hair and floral elements, gives the piece a remarkable technical quality and a high decorative value.
The drapery, resolved with wide and fluid folds, shows an academic mastery of volume and brings dynamism to the composition, in balance with the serenity of the whole.
It is a work representative of the artistic taste of the end of the century, where classical tradition and modern sensibility coexist in pieces destined for a cultured bourgeois public, with a clear ornamental vocation and great aesthetic presence.
