Néstor Basterretxea studied drawing and painting in Paris, and after the outbreak of the Second World War he went with his family to Argentina, where he began his career. During these years he was a disciple of the Argentinean painter Emilio Pettoruti, and won awards such as the Altamira scholarship. Already fully recognized as a painter, from the fifties he took part in numerous exhibitions of avant-garde art, both in America and Europe. He was a founding member of Equipo 57, and formed the Gaur group together with Chillida, Oteiza and other Basque artists. A restless creator, apart from being a painter, Basterretxea was also a filmmaker, photographer and poet. He is currently represented in numerous private and institutional collections, such as that of the Basque Parliament, and other outdoor collections in the United States, Argentina, France and Spain.
