Important pair of bronze sculptures that pay homage to the two great landmarks of Italian Renaissance equestrian statuary. These works faithfully reproduce the original monuments: that of Erasmo da Narni "Gattamelata", erected by Donatello in Padua (1453), and that of Bartolomeo Colleoni, completed by Verrocchio in Venice (1488).
The pieces masterfully capture the evolution of Renaissance language. On the one hand, the classical serenity and control of the Gattamelata, which recovers the Roman tradition of Marcus Aurelius; on the other, the dynamism and terribilità of the Colleoni, whose horse in movement and defiant gesture already announce the strength of the Baroque.
The quality of the casting, visible in the meticulous detail of the openwork armor and the musculature of the equines, places this pair as a high-level production within the historicist period. This type of set, presented in pairs, are pieces of great decorative elegance and highly coveted in the collector's market, as they represent the pinnacle of the Western sculptural tradition.
