BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Italian school, XVII century.
"Neptune".
Marble.
Measurements: 86 x 33 x 32 cm.
In this work the author has conceived the figure of the marine god with a strong corporal presence, emphasizing the anatomy and the contained movement, characteristic features of the sculpture of this period. The treatment of the marble reveals a technical mastery aimed at exploiting the hallmarks of light and shadow, visible in the posture, the depth of the wavy hair and the agitation of the folds of the cloak. More than a static representation, the work conveys a sense of latent energy, as if the god were emerging from the water. This theatricality, combined with the classical idealization of the body, responds to the Baroque desire to move the viewer through a combination of naturalism and drama.
The iconography refers to Neptune, Roman divinity of the seas, equivalent to the Greek Poseidon, often represented as a mature, bearded figure with a robust complexion. In the context of the 17th century, his image also acquired political and symbolic connotations, being associated with dominion, power and control of natural forces, which explains his frequent presence in monumental fountains, gardens and decorative programs linked to courts and urban spaces. The work is part of the Italian Baroque sculptural environment, deeply marked by the influence of Gian Lorenzo Bernini. In this period, Rome became the main center of artistic production, driven by papal and aristocratic patronage, which favored the creation of works intended to exalt both faith and political prestige. The Italian school of the 17th century is characterized by a synthesis between the classical heritage and a new sensibility based on movement, emotion and interaction with the surrounding space.
