Sculptor and academic linked to constructivism, he studied drawing at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts and the Académie Julian in Paris, continuing his studies at the School of Fine Arts in Chile, where he trained in sculpture with professors such as Marta Colvin and Julio Antonio Vasquez. In 1967 he began teaching at the School of Fine Arts. Thanks to a scholarship, he went to the United States, where he continued to work as a teacher. He was president of the Chilean Association of Painters and Sculptors in the 1970s and, in 1995, he became a full member of the Academy of Fine Arts of the Institute of Chile. Castillo Mandiola was the first sculptor commissioned to create an abstract sculpture to be exhibited in a public space. His sculptural work stands out for its peculiar technique based on the use of metal plates and pieces to elaborate abstract compositions of geometric equilibrium.
