BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Spanish School; first half of the XVII century.
"Child Jesus".
Carved and polychrome wood.
They present restorations.
Measurements: 110 x 46 x 31 cm.
The piece shows a child of robust anatomy and ascending attitude, with the right arm raised in a gesture of blessing or proclamation, while the open left hand establishes a symbolic dialogue with the viewer. This type of iconography was frequent in religious imagery linked to the triumphant Child Jesus, especially in Spanish and Viceroyal workshops where polychrome sculpture reached an extraordinary technical and spiritual sophistication.
The work stands out for the richness of its polychromy and for the refinement of the stew applied on the tunic. The ornamental gilding, worked with vegetal motifs and textile-inspired scrolls, reveals a clear affiliation with the Iberian Baroque tradition, in which sculpture not only sought to represent the sacred, but also to generate an intense visual and emotional experience. The treatment of the soft and luminous flesh tones, as well as the modeling of the curls and folds of the dress, demonstrate a remarkable quality of craftsmanship and a technical mastery typical of workshops specialized in religious imagery.
The piece participates in the baroque sensibility by its restrained theatricality and the idealized naturalism of the child's face. The elevated eyes and half-open mouth suggest an ecstatic dimension that brings the image closer to the counter-reformist ideals, where art should move and bring the faithful closer to the spiritual experience. However, the moderate dynamism of the figure and the decorative elegance of the attire also allow us to notice rococo influences, perceptible in the ornamental delicacy and the almost courtly grace of the composition.
Pieces of this nature occupied a central place in the domestic and conventual religiosity of the Hispanic world. They were images destined for private contemplation as well as for processions and liturgical celebrations.
