DESCRIPTION
JEF LAMBEAUX (Antwerp, Belgium, 1852 - Brussels, Belgium, 1908)
"Wrestlers," ca. 1900.
Patinated bronze.
Signed on the base.
Measurements: 107 x 25 x 65 cm.
Sculpture in patinated bronze representing two male figures in full fight, captured in a composition of great dynamism and anatomical tension. The group is articulated through a marked diagonal movement, with the bodies intertwined and resolved with a vigorous modeling, vibrant surfaces and accentuated muscular expressiveness. The work responds to the sculptural language of Jef Lambeaux, characterized by an interest in the human body, physical strength and compositions of intense dramatic energy.
Jef Lambeaux, born Joseph Marie Thomas Lambeaux, was one of the most outstanding Belgian sculptors of the late 19th century. Trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, he was a disciple of Jozef Geefs. Among his most famous creations are the Brabo Fountain in Antwerp and the monumental relief The Human Passions, preserved in the Horta Pavilion of the Cinquantenaire Park in Brussels. His production is represented in institutions such as the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Brussels, the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Liège, the Museum of Fine Arts in Leuven and the Museum Folkwang in Essen.
