DESCRIPTION
Tabernacle Door; Spanish School; XVI century.
"Risen Christ".
Carved, polychrome and gilded wood.
Measurements: 39.5 x 24 x 3 cm.
The work was the main part of a tabernacle, a liturgical element destined to guard the Blessed Sacrament on the altar. The choice of the figure of the Risen Christ for this location is particularly significant, as it establishes a direct relationship between the Resurrection of Christ and the sacrament of the Eucharist, the center of the spiritual and devotional life of the Church.
From the artistic point of view, the piece responds to the models of Spanish sculpture of the 16th century, a period marked by the transition between the late Gothic languages and the new Renaissance forms. The figure presents a balanced and frontal composition, conceived to favor its contemplation within the architectural ensemble to which it belonged. The carving is complemented with a rich polychrome and gilding, resources that not only visually enriched the image, but also contributed to enhance its sacred and ceremonial character.
The cross carried by Christ is one of the most common attributes of the iconography of the Resurrection, symbolizing the victory achieved through the sacrifice of the Passion. For its part, the blessing gesture underlines the salvific dimension of the scene, transmitting a message of hope and redemption addressed to the faithful.
