DESCRIPTION
19th-century Spanish school.
“Christ on the Cross.”
Carved boxwood, polychromed.
Cross from a later period.
Measurements: 37 x 24 cm (Christ); 60 x 40 cm (cross).
The piece now up for auction is a 19th-century Crucified Christ of marked sobriety and devotional character, depicted with a slender body leaning slightly forward, his head bowed over his chest, and a serene expression that conveys resignation and restrained suffering. The figure’s anatomy is rendered in a naturalistic style, with gently defined musculature and subtle traces of the Passion, while the face—framed by long hair and a beard—accentuates the drama of the scene. He wears a simple, pleated cloth of purity tied at the waist and is depicted affixed to a wooden cross with straight lines, whose austerity enhances the figure of Christ, reflecting the historicist taste and religious art typical of the 19th century, intended for private worship or small oratories.
