Pair of altarpiece reliefs; Spain or Italy, 17th century.
Carved wood.
Measurements: 180 x 44 x 10 cm (x2).
The pieces depict cherub figures integrated into a complex composition of plant scrollwork and volutes, forming an ornamental language designed to visually enrich the structure of an altarpiece or liturgical furniture. The childlike faces emerge from a dynamic interplay of curved forms that seem to grow organically from the wood itself, creating a sense of continuous movement characteristic of the Baroque style. Beyond their decorative function, these elements contributed to the creation of a space in which the presence of celestial beings reinforced the sacred nature of the whole.
The works are fully imbued with the Baroque aesthetic developed both in Italy and in the territories of the Spanish Monarchy during the 17th century. The predominance of sinuous lines, the deep carving of the forms, and the pursuit of chiaroscuro effects through the alternation of recessed and protruding sections generate a marked sense of dynamism. The cherubs have gentle, idealized features, with curly hair and serene expressions, while the wings and plant motifs blend into a fluid composition that avoids any geometric rigidity. The carving also demonstrates remarkable technical skill in the treatment of wood, a material that allows for a richness of textures and a sculptural depth particularly well-suited to the theatrical effects sought by the Baroque.
These pieces must be viewed within the context of the extraordinary development of monumental altarpieces during the 17th and 18th centuries. In both Italy and Spain, the artistic renewal promoted by the Church following the Council of Trent fostered the creation of increasingly spectacular and emotionally immersive religious spaces.
