DESCRIPTION
ANTONI BELLMUNT TRAFACH (Barcelona, 1914–1988).
"Figure," 1947.
Wood
Signed and dated.
Measurements: 68 x 20 x 16 cm.
A carved wooden sculpture depicting a standing, nude female figure holding bunches of grapes in both hands. The figure adopts a slightly leaning posture, with her legs gently crossed, reinforcing the sense of grace and serene verticality. The body exhibits a characteristic volumetric fullness, with broad and compact forms, yet balanced by a refinement of lines that lends elegance and structural clarity.
Antoni Bellmunt was a student of Antoni Parera and Jaume Otero at the Escola de Llotja in Barcelona. He specialized in portraits, which he executed with great technical skill and virtuosity. Much of his work is dedicated to the Balearic Islands. His bust of Juan Carlos I is housed in the Saló de la Reina Regent at Barcelona City Hall. He participated in the 1951 Barcelona Municipal Fine Arts Exhibition with the work “Isla de Formentera,” which is currently part of the collection of the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (MNAC).
