Josep Granyer trained at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona, where his artistic personality soon developed into a style entirely his own. A prominent sculptor, he also practiced drawing, printmaking, and illustration. In 1917, he founded the group Los Evolucionistas and was an active member of the Barcelona avant-garde of the time. He traveled to Paris, London, and Belgium, and after the Civil War, he focused on animal sculpture in which animals adopted human poses not without a touch of irony. Examples include “The Seated Bull” and “The Flirtatious Giraffe,” both located on Barcelona’s Rambla de Cataluña. Granyer’s work is currently represented at the Patio Herreriano Museum in Valladolid and the MACBA in Barcelona, among other institutions.
