BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

JOAN BORRELL NICOLAU (Pobla de Segur, 1888 – Barcelona, 1951).
"Portrait of Antonio Salvá i Torres," Palma de Mallorca, 1942.
Santanyi stone.
Signed and dated.
Measurements: 60 x 50 x 30 cm.

Created in 1925 and carved from marble, this portrait of Mercé Plantada stands as one of the most compelling examples of Joan Borrell’s period of full creative maturity. The work reveals Borrell’s characteristic technical mastery in sculptural portraiture: anatomical precision without academic rigidity, control of modeling, and a deliberate restraint in expression that lends the figure a serene and dignified presence. The treatment of the marble—with its polished, luminous surface—is executed with great sensitivity in areas such as the face and hair, where the transition between planes is softened to emphasize psychological character over mere physical resemblance. Within the context of Catalan sculpture from the interwar period, this portrait exemplifies the desire to combine refined realism with measured modernity, moving away from decorative excess to focus on the construction of a solid and human identity. It is, therefore, a particularly significant piece within Borrell’s portraiture, with an outstanding exhibition history and formal qualities that place it among his most important works.
