Although Antoniucci Volti achieved international fame for his sculptures of female figures, he simultaneously produced a remarkable body of work featuring animal subjects, to which he applied the same principle of volumetric simplification and formal synthesis. His bulls, horses, and birds reveal a profoundly sculptural interpretation of nature, in which each form is reduced to its essence without losing its evocative power.
Antoniucci Volti, known artistically as Volti, was one of the most prominent sculptors of the 20th-century French school. Having lived in France since childhood, he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he was a student of Jean Boucher. He achieved international recognition after winning the Grand Prix de Rome for Sculpture in 1939 and went on to have a brilliant career marked by numerous exhibitions and public commissions. His work, focused primarily on the female figure and a refined interpretation of the human and animal body, is characterized by the harmony of its volumes, the sensuality of its forms, and a constant search for balance between classical tradition and modernity. In 1990, the Musée Volti in Villefranche-sur-Mer opened, an institution dedicated to preserving and promoting his artistic legacy.
