The Winged Victory of Samothrace is one of the most famous sculptures of Classical Antiquity and one of the great masterpieces of Hellenistic art. Created around 190 B.C., it depicts Nike, the Greek goddess of Victory, perched on the prow of a ship to commemorate a naval triumph. The extraordinary sense of movement, the masterful rendering of the folds of the cloak—which appear to be billowing in the sea breeze—and the expressive power of the composition revolutionized ancient sculpture, making it a universal symbol of triumph, beauty, and dynamism. Discovered in 1863 on the Greek island of Samothrace by the French diplomat Charles Champoiseau, it has been housed ever since at the Louvre Museum in Paris, where it presides over the monumental Daru Staircase.

During the 19th century, the Winged Victory of Samothrace became a true icon of academic taste and the rediscovery of classical antiquity. Fine arts academies, museums, and schools throughout Europe commissioned numerous plaster casts so that students could learn directly from one of the greatest examples of classical sculpture. These casts made it possible to study idealized anatomy, movement, composition, and the rendering of folds without having to travel to Paris, while also disseminating a model considered the unsurpassed standard of artistic perfection.
