These two sculptures are modeled after the Riace Warriors, though they are presented as a modern reinterpretation of the classical Greek tradition. Both figures, with idealized anatomy and heroic poses, maintain the characteristic contrapposto, featuring vigorous torsos and serene expressions, evoking the physical perfection and spiritual balance of Hellenic art. However, their craftsmanship reveals a contemporary aesthetic: the bronze surfaces display deliberate textures, patinas that play with dark and green hues, and a volumetric treatment that emphasizes the body’s dynamic tension.
The Riace Warriors, also known as the Riace Bronzes, are a pair of 5th-century B.C. Greek statues on display at the National Museum of Magna Graecia in Reggio Calabria, depicting a young man and an elderly man. The statues preserved in the museum are two of the few remaining bronze examples of ancient Greek art, along with the Poseidon at the National Archaeological Museum in Athens and the Charioteer of Delphi. The two Greek statues were discovered near the town of Riace, in the province of Reggio, in 1972, hence their name. Despite their similarities, the study reveals notable differences between the two statues. They are attributed to two different artists, although there is controversy over whether they were created by artists from the same workshop or, instead, were made in different periods.
