Biscuit porcelain (unglazed) table clock with gilded bronze trim, made around 1900 following late 18th-century Louis XVI models in the Sèvres style. The case houses an enameled porcelain dial with Arabic numerals. On either side are two biscuit-porcelain figures in the round, depicting a young couple dressed in 18th-century fashion. The ensemble rests on a mixtilinear base decorated with reliefs of plant motifs and three gilt-bronze cartouches with fretwork decoration, supported by small bronze feet. The Paris-style movement features a platform escapement visible through the back of the case, a system widely used in French watchmaking of the period due to its reliability and ease of maintenance.

Biscuit porcelain—that is, porcelain fired only once without the application of a final glaze—gives the clay a matte, velvety finish that mimics the feel and appearance of marble, making it particularly well-suited for the reproduction of highly detailed sculptural figures. It was precisely the Sèvres manufactory that popularized this type of porcelain beginning in the mid-18th century, with figures and groups inspired by models from sculptors such as Falconet or compositions by painters such as Boucher, making it a hallmark of 18th-century French production. This preference for white biscuit—understated and with a sculptural finish—remained in vogue throughout the 19th century, with numerous French workshops reproducing it in ornate pieces for the bourgeois market at the end of the century.
