DESCRIPTION
Viceroyal-era school; 18th century.
“Saint John of Nepomuk.”
Carved, gilded, and polychrome wood.
Measurements: 107 x 56 x 10 cm.
The saint is depicted standing on a cloud, with his hands crossed over his chest and his gaze raised toward heavenly glory. He is dressed in the characteristic attire of a canon: a black cassock, a white surplice, and a dark mozzetta with gold trim. At the top, a beam of divine light descends amid clouds populated by cherubs. A crown of five stars surrounds the saint’s head—one of his most characteristic attributes—alluding to the miracle that occurred after his martyrdom when, according to tradition, five stars appeared over the Vltava River. Due to its sculptural quality, Baroque composition, and state of preservation, this devotional relief is representative of 18th-century New Spain art. The original carved and gilded frame enhances its historical and decorative value.
Viceroyal sculpture was not a mere extension of peninsular art, but rather the result of a fruitful cultural exchange between Europe and the Americas. Workshops established in cities such as Mexico City, Puebla, Quito, Cuzco, and Lima reinterpreted Spanish Baroque models by incorporating local materials, techniques, and sensibilities. The result was a distinct artistic language, characterized by extraordinary polychromatic richness, marked naturalism, and a special ability to evoke the viewer’s empathy—aspects that made religious imagery one of the primary vehicles for evangelization in the Americas.
