Created during one of the artist’s most experimental periods, this work highlights his conception of ceramics as a fully artistic and experimental medium. Far from viewing it as a functional object, Jorn transforms it into a space of freedom where the irregular surface, hand-modeling, and painterly intervention come together in a single creation. The composition is structured by a gestural drawing of thick black lines that define a biomorphic figure, resembling an animal or a fantastical being—one of the recurring motifs in his imagery. The use of colored glazes applied with apparent spontaneity, together with the piece’s asymmetry and the marked expressiveness of the line, evoke the principles of the CoBrA group, which championed intuitive creation inspired by folk art, children’s drawings, and primitive cultures. The result is a work of great vitality, where painting, sculpture, and ceramics converge in a deeply personal and experimental language.

Asger Jorn, a Danish painter, sculptor, and theorist, is known for being one of the founders of the COBRA movement, which promoted spontaneous, expressive, and free art inspired by the primitive and the childlike. His style is characterized by gestural brushstrokes, intense colors, and distorted or fantastical figures; he was also a member of the Situationist International, combining his artistic practice with a strong philosophical and critical stance toward the culture and society of his time. Jorn fought for the total freedom of art. He produced a wide-ranging body of work, including painting, collage, writing, tapestries, sculpture, and—in the final years of his life—ceramics, as well as a valuable body of work on paper (engravings, lithographs, drawings, and book illustrations). Jorn also placed his art in the service of a rebellion against the sacred. He published *The Green Language and Drunkenness* in 1968, a pamphlet against structuralism. Awards and honors: He was awarded the Order of the Great Gidouille, an order of the pataphysicists. In 1964, he was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship, which Jorn rejected via a telegram sent from Paris. His paintings are represented in the most important museums of modern art around the world, including the Tate Modern in the UK, MoMA and the Guggenheim in New York, and the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid.
