This sculpture of Saint Jerome, one of the four great Fathers of the Latin Church and translator of the Holy Scriptures into Latin in the famous Vulgate, is a remarkable example of 16th-century Spanish religious art. The saint is depicted in his role as a Doctor of the Church and scholar of the Scriptures, moving away from the more common penitential iconography to present himself as a scholar inspired by divine wisdom.

The open book alludes to his intellectual and theological work, while his right hand resting on his chest conveys a gesture of inner reflection and profound spirituality. At his feet lies the lion, his most characteristic iconographic attribute, associated with the well-known legend according to which Saint Jerome removed a thorn from the animal’s paw. Far from serving as a mere narrative element, the sculptor integrates it into the composition with remarkable volumetric presence.

The quality of the carving is particularly evident in the rendering of the face, the hands, and the long, wavy beard, whose deep locks create a vivid interplay of light and shadow. The face concentrates much of the image’s expressive power: the downcast gaze and slightly parted mouth convey the attitude of a man absorbed in reading and contemplation, in keeping with the saint’s intellectual and spiritual dimension.

The polychromy preserves extensive gilded areas and remnants of gilding of remarkable decorative richness, particularly visible on the vestments. The hallmarks of these ornate surfaces and the more subdued treatment of the flesh tones reinforce the figure’s presence and highlight the important role played by polychromy in Spanish devotional sculpture of the period.

Due to its formal characteristics, the work is fully in line with the tradition of 16th-century Spanish religious sculpture, a period in which certain late-Gothic elements still coexisted with the new Renaissance trends coming from Italy. The work embodies that unique balance between spirituality, naturalism, and expressiveness that defines some of the finest Spanish religious works of the period.
