Due to its secular subject matter and its strong narrative quality, this bas-relief occupies a unique place within Tuscan sculpture from the transition between the 14th and 15th centuries. The scene depicts two horsemen facing off in a joust, a motif linked to chivalric culture and the prestigious spectacles of the late medieval elites. Jousts, tournaments, and hunts were also part of the figurative repertoire later used in the ceremonial domestic furnishings of Italy’s great families.

The composition unfolds in a bas-relief of great clarity, set against a virtually neutral background that focuses attention on the confrontation between the two horses charging at a gallop. The riders lean forward on their mounts, holding long weapons, while the movement of their limbs and manes gives the scene a marked horizontal rhythm. The meticulous detailing of the reins, harnesses, manes, and garments is a hallmark of the work, which also features broader modeling of the horses’ anatomies, creating a work that is both decorative and narrative.

Its connection to Pisa takes on special significance in a city where the legacy of ancient sculpture has maintained an exceptional presence. The numerous Roman sarcophagi preserved around the cathedral and later gathered in the Camposanto served as a fundamental reference for generations of sculptors: some of them directly inspired works by Nicola Pisano and helped keep a classical language alive in medieval Pisan sculpture. Around 1400, this long-standing tradition was already coexisting with the elegant forms of the late Gothic and with a renewed focus on the figure, movement, and compositional clarity that would anticipate certain developments of the early Renaissance.
