A German sculptor active between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Alois Mayer primarily created small-scale bronze sculptures, as well as some monumental works in both bronze and other materials. No details are known about his early training, but it is known that he moved to Munich in his youth, no later than 1882, and enrolled in the city’s Academy of Fine Arts. At that institution, he was awarded the “Urkunde über Verleihung des Bürgers- und Heimathrechtes” prize. Around 1885, he began working as an assistant in the studio of Professor Wilhelm von Rümann, with whom he would soon collaborate on the monumental statue of Prince Regent Luitpold in Nuremberg. It was precisely during this period that he began his career as an independent artist, soon becoming a member of the National Association of Visual Artists and the Munich Artists’ Guild. The quality of his work earned him an ever-growing reputation, reflected in distinguished honors such as the Ludwig Medal for Science and the Arts and the Silver Medal of Prince Regent Luitpold. His work is currently represented in the Schlossmuseum in Linz and the Ruhr Museum in Essen, among other public and private collections, and he also has monuments in various German cities.
