Jean Didier Debut trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he won the Grand Prix, which allowed him to travel to Rome. He exhibited at several Parisian salons. He focused primarily on the human figure, particularly in Orientalist settings. He is associated with the Romantic movement. He was the father and teacher of Marcel Début, who also became a prominent bronze sculptor.
