Matthew Shlian is an American artist whose practice lies at the intersection of art, geometry, design, and paper engineering. He studied at Alfred University, where he earned his BFA in 2002, and later completed an MFA at Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2006, specializing in print media and paper engineering. His career has evolved from an exploration of the sculptural possibilities of paper, transforming a two-dimensional surface through folds, cuts, modules, and geometric structures. His work combines mathematical precision and experimentation, creating forms that appear to be in a permanent state of motion.
A fundamental part of her career has been her collaboration with scientists and engineers at the University of Michigan, where she investigated the connections between folding, geometry, and scientific phenomena on a microscopic scale. He has exhibited at international museums and institutions such as the Dennos Museum Center, the CODA Museum, the National Academy of Sciences, and the Museum of Mathematics in New York, among others.
