Virginia Rota is a self-taught photographer with a degree in Psychology and a Masters in Experimental and Documentary Film. Her artistic practice develops at the intersection between photography, portraiture and the performing arts, collaborating as a visual artist with leading contemporary dance companies such as Peeping Tom, La Phármaco, Janet Novás and Daniel Abreu, among others.
Her photographic work has been exhibited in multiple international contexts, including cultural spaces and festivals in Spain, Greece, Chile, Guatemala, Italy, Senegal, Brazil and Portugal. She has been recognized with numerous awards and distinctions, among which are the Accésit and Acquisition Award of Plastic Arts CICUS 2021, the Acquisition Award DKV 2020, the Galicia Contemporary Photography Award 2018, the First Prize Nexofoto 2017, the First Prize Young Creators of Madrid 2017, the Second Prize La Palabra Pintada of the Ankaria Foundation, as well as the First Prize MalagaCrea 2015.
His work has become part of various public and private collections, including those of the Setba Foundation, the University of Huelva, the DKV Collection, the University of Seville and the Contemporary Art Center of Malaga. After his passage through the Blankpaper Master (2014-2015), his artistic production has been included in prominent international festivals such as FOTOFESTIWAL (Lodz, Poland), FORMAT (Derby, UK), ORGAN VIDA (Zagreb, Croatia), Kaunas Foto (Lithuania), PhotoEspaña, Athens Photo (Greece), Lagos Photo (Nigeria), the Thessaloniki Museum of Photography (Greece), the Singapore International Photography Festival (SIPF), Photo Marseille (France), Odessa Photo Days (Ukraine) and ArtPhotoBCN, among others.
In 2017 she was selected to carry out the artistic residency "El Ranchito" between Matadero Madrid and the Art House Foundation in Lagos (Nigeria), where she developed a research focused on the colonization of the concept of woman. Subsequently, in 2022, she was an artist-in-residence invited by Gallerie 21 in Hamburg, and that same year she carried out an artistic residency at the Fondazione Orestiadi, in Sicily.
