Milagros de la Torre is an artist based in New York. Her work is part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. She was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in Creative Arts -Photography- in 2011 and a Smithsonian Artist Fellowship Award in 2021. He is also on the advisory board of the Penumbra Foundation in New York.
De la Torre has been working since the 1990s. She emigrated from Peru as a young woman to develop her career in London, Paris, Mexico City and finally settled in New York. In the fall of 2023 she was named "Wolf Chair in Photography" at Cooper Union, where she gave an artist's talk.
She has lectured at numerous institutions: the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University, Columbia University, Parsons School of Design, the International Center of Photography (ICP), the Pratt Institute, the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts, Artpace, the Americas Society, the Museo de Arte de Lima (MALI), MALBA and the School of Visual Arts.
His recognitions also include the Dora Maar Fellowship from The Brown Foundation (2014), the Peter S. Reed Foundation Photography Award (2016), the "Persona Meritoria de la Cultura" Medal from the Peruvian Ministry of Culture (2016), the "Sustainable Arts Foundation Residency Grant" (2020) and the "Hundred Heroines" award (2021).
