This photograph of Joaquim Mir has a remarkable importance both documentary and symbolic, as it shows the painter in one of the spaces most linked to the spirituality and the Catalan artistic imaginary: the Gothic cloister of the monastery of Montserrat, judging by the arches that form it. The image not only portrays the artist in a mature stage of his life, but also places him in an architectural and cultural environment deeply connected with the Catalan identity and with many of the aesthetic values of modernism.

The photograph is especially relevant because Joaquim Mir was one of the great renovators of landscape painting in Catalan and Spanish painting at the beginning of the 20th century. His work transformed the representation of nature through a radical use of color and light, turning the landscape into an almost emotional and sensory experience.
