DESCRIPTION

ÓSCAR FERNÁNDEZ ORENGO (San Sebastián, 1971).
“Bigas Luna.”
Black-and-white photograph on paper.

Shows slight staining.
Measurements: 18 × 47 cm; 30.5 × 49.5 cm (paper).

This portrait of Bigas Luna is part of the extensive project that Óscar Fernández Orengo has been working on since 2001 to build a visual archive of Spanish, Latin American, and European filmmakers. The use of black-and-white and the panoramic format—hallmarks of his film-focused series—allows the photographer to transcend the conventional portrait and connect the subject with the space chosen to represent him.

The composition places the Barcelona-born director face-to-face with a large black dog, both seated at the same height and silhouetted against the uneven light of the wall. The wide frame leaves an empty space between them that focuses attention on their exchange of glances and transforms the scene into a sort of silent dialogue.

The intense contrast between Bigas Luna’s black and white clothing is mirrored in the dog’s dark silhouette, while the illuminated wall unifies the scene. This economy of elements, combined with the image’s horizontal composition, brings the photograph closer to a frozen cinematic sequence and naturally conveys the direct, intimate, and narrative character that distinguishes Fernández Orengo’s portraits.

Óscar Fernández Orengo has focused much of his career on portraiting filmmakers, typically using an analog panoramic camera and black-and-white film. His projects have been presented by the Instituto Cervantes and Acción Cultural Española in numerous exhibitions held in Spain and abroad. In addition to his work as an artist, he has worked as a set photographer for directors such as Isaki Lacuesta, Mar Coll, Jonás Trueba, and Javier Rebollo.
