This early photographic portrait of Marià Fortuny holds significant documentary and iconographic value. Dated around 1868, it shows the painter in his early thirties, during a decisive phase of his international rise to prominence that coincided with the start of work on *La vicaría*. Fortuny is shown full-length, looking directly at the camera with a confident and natural demeanor, set against the characteristic backdrop of nineteenth-century photography studios.

The carte de visite format, intended for circulation and exchange, helped spread the public image of artists and prominent figures throughout the 19th century. The identification of the photographer and the early date of the photograph reinforce the significance of this image within the iconography of Fortuny, one of the most internationally renowned Spanish painters of his generation.
