DESCRIPTION

MIGUEL TRILLO (Jimena de la Frontera, Cádiz, 1953).
"Boxing Exhibition at the Sala de Apolo," Barcelona, 1995.
Color photograph on paper. Edition 1/7.
Includes a label from the IVAM (Institut Valencià d'Art Modern) and an exhibition label.
Measurements: 42.5 x 28 cm; 68 x 53 cm (frame).
In this image, Miguel Trillo turns his gaze toward one of the iconic venues of Barcelona’s popular culture: the Sala Apolo. The ring and the boxers take center stage in a scene where sport, spectacle, and urban life intertwine. The photograph captures that moment when boxing ceases to be merely a competition and becomes a public event and performance, with the audience and the venue as essential parts of the scene.Trillo’s interest lies in observing these environments from a close and spontaneous perspective, paying attention both to the protagonists and to the social and aesthetic codes that surround them. Color and composition lend the image a particularly vivid dimension, in keeping with his interest in portraying popular culture and the social spaces of Spanish cities.
The work belongs to his body of work from the 1990s, a period in which Trillo expanded his exploration of youth and urban cultures beyond Madrid, incorporating new cities, environments, and forms of leisure into his unique archive of contemporary society.
Miguel Trillo is a key figure in contemporary Spanish photography. His work has been exhibited at institutions such as the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid, the Andalusian Center for Contemporary Art, and the MAXXI in Rome, and is part of major public and private collections.
