Sabas of Cappadocia is identifiable in this Greek icon by the name written on the golden background. The saint, with a stylised canon, holds a written parchment and adopts the gesture of blessing with his right hand. He wears a tunic and cloak in a vigorous range of colours. Sabas the Sanctified or Saint Sabas of Cappadocia (5th century) was a priest of Anatolia. He is venerated as a saint by the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church. He lived mainly in Palestine, dedicating himself to hermitage. He was the founder of several monasteries, the main one being Mar Saba.
