DESCRIPTION
Iconostasis; 19th century.
“Saint Nicholas.”
Metal and enamel triptych.
Measurements: 12 x 17 x 1 cm.
Portable devotional triptych (skladen) made of cast metal and enamel, with a green fabric-covered case. The piece consists of three folding panels, with Saint Nicholas of Bari depicted on the central panel, flanked by scenes from his life and figures of saints. The decoration combines metal relief with areas of blue enamel, adding contrast and ornamental richness to the composition.Due to its small size and folding structure, this piece was designed for private devotion and portability—a characteristic of small Russian metal icons intended to accompany the faithful outside the liturgical space.
Saint Nicholas of Bari, one of the most venerated saints in the Orthodox world, frequently appears on this type of devotional object. As Bishop of Myra in Lycia, his cult spread widely throughout the Eastern Christian world, and his figure became associated with numerous accounts of miracles and acts of charity.
