DESCRIPTION
Icon; 19th century.
Triptych in a silver case.
Bears the hallmark “A. Estreyden.”
Measurements: 12 x 30 x 2.5 cm.
Portable triptych consisting of three panels connected by metal hinges, designed to close for easy transport and preservation. The panels depict Eastern Christian themes, with scenes linked to Gospel episodes and the liturgical calendar, including, possibly, the Holy Women at the Tomb. The scenes are painted on wood and framed by an elaborate silver metal mount, which combines a protective function with a distinctly ornamental character. The use of a silver overlay (oklad or riza) is characteristic of numerous icons intended for private devotion.
Portable triptychs were particularly useful objects in Orthodox private devotion. Their foldable format allowed them to be carried or placed in small domestic prayer spaces. These types of pieces could bring together various scenes from the life of Christ, the Virgin Mary, or the major feasts of the liturgical calendar.
