BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Icon; 19th century.
“Anastasis and Resurrection.”
Paint and gilding on wood—
Measurements: 54 x 44 x 4 cm.
A rectangular icon whose central composition depicts the Descent of Christ into Hell, or Anastasis, one of the fundamental images of Orthodox Christian iconography and one of the representations associated with the liturgical cycle of Easter. The scene shows the victorious Christ descending into Limbo to free the souls of the righteous from the Old Testament. The composition is structured around the figure of Christ, whose central presence organizes the whole and underscores the triumphant nature of the Resurrection. Surrounding the main scene is a broad frame of small narrative scenes, conceived as a true visual cycle. These panels depict various feasts of the Orthodox liturgical calendar and episodes from the Gospels, forming a repertoire of what are known as the Great Feasts of the Eastern tradition.
The gilding that remains on the surface helps reinforce the sacred nature of the depiction. In the Orthodox iconographic tradition, gold serves not only as an ornamental element but also symbolically alludes to divine light and a transcendent reality that transcends earthly space and time.
