DESCRIPTION
Pair of urns in the manner of Sèvres; France, c. 1890.
Enameled porcelain and bronze mounts gilded with mercury and by immersion.
Signed H. Poitevin.
Measurements: 24 x 12,5 x 8 cm (x2).
Pair of urns with the same design, following the models established by the Sèvres manufacture. Both vases are made in painted enameled porcelain, with predominance of the characteristic light blue of the French firm, in combination with the golden bronze. Covering a large part of the body are figurative scenes of classical inspiration. These painted vignettes covering almost the entire body are signed "H, Poitevin". The bronze base has a molded design and the mouth is shaped.
The Sèvres porcelain manufactory originated in 18th century France. It was founded in 1740 in Vincennes and moved to Sèvres, near Versailles, in 1756, under the patronage of King Louis XV and his mistress Madame de Pompadour. From its inception, the Sèvres manufactory received royal patronage, which made it possible to attract the best craftsmen and artists of the time. This support also ensured that the porcelain produced was of the highest quality and luxury, destined for European royalty and nobility. Sèvres porcelain is known for its fine quality, hardness and translucence.
