BID HISTORY
DESCRIPTION
Pair of combs in gold, silver and celluloid with diamonds. Work of the XIX century.
Delicate pair of vintage combs made in gold and silver and diamonds with celluloid spikes imitating tortoiseshell, typical material in high quality hair ornaments during the second half of the nineteenth century. The openwork horseshoe-shaped design stands out for its refined vegetal work, with floral motifs and garlands meticulously chiseled in silver, decorated with small brilliant-cut diamonds set in grain.
The upper part, worked by hand, presents a remarkable mastery in the fretwork, with fine details of naturalistic inspiration, in line with the historicist taste of the time. The long, slightly curved prongs retain their functionality and elegance, serving both as an ornamental accessory and as a status symbol.
They are preserved in their original burgundy velvet and cream silk case, signed by Caplan's Jewelry Store, Harrisburg, PA, an American jewelry store active in the early 20th century, providing an interesting provenance value.
Measurements: 13 cm (length) x 4.5 cm (width)
