This medal corresponds to an official insignia of the National Order of the Legion of Honor (Légion d'honneur), the highest distinction granted by the French State. Founded in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte, the order rewards exceptional merits in the civil and military fields.
The piece presents the classic form of a five-armed star with white enameled arms, arranged on a laurel and oak wreath in green enamel, symbols of victory and strength. In the center, a golden medallion shows two crossed tricolor flags, surrounded by a blue band with the inscription:
"HONNEUR ET PATRIE" ("Honor and Fatherland"), traditional motto of the order.
At the top is a golden royal crown, a decorative element used in certain commemorative or protocol versions, although not in current republican models. This crown suggests a reissue inspired by 19th century versions (July Monarchy or Second Empire), or a modern diplomatic variant.
The enamel and gilt work shows a refined execution, typical of the official insignia issued by the French government or faithfully reproduced by authorized goldsmiths.
