DESCRIPTION
Badge representing the Knight's Cross of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, 1880-1950.
In 14 kt. gold and white enamel.
The enamel has a small break in one of the blades.
Weight: 9,57 g.
Measurements: 6 x 3,50 cm.
This insignia represents the Knight's Cross of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, made in 14 kt. gold with white enameled arms. Between the arms there are golden fleurons, and at the top there is an openwork royal crown, symbol of the nobiliary character of the order. Its upper ring suggests that it was designed as a collar insignia, used in formal acts of investiture.
The eight-pointed cross, the central emblem of the order, symbolizes the eight beatitudes and the knightly virtues. This piece, probably made in Western Europe between the late 19th and mid-20th centuries, is associated with the awards given by the Order to outstanding individuals for their religious or humanitarian service.
