DESCRIPTION
DALÍ I DOMÈNECH, Salvador (Figueras, Girona, 1904 – 1989).
“Christ of St. John of the Cross” medallion, gold-plated sterling silver.
Created in collaboration between Dalí and the Lincoln Mint, circa 1972.
Original pouch.
Weight: 3 g.
Measurements: 3.8 x 3 cm.
This collaboration represents the culmination of Dalí’s “Nuclear Mysticism,” a period in which the artist fused Christian iconography with theories of atomic physics. The design seeks to convey the idea of a weightless divinity, replacing the traditional rigid cross with curved forms that appear to float in space, thereby eliminating the sense of suffering to focus on geometric perfection. The collaboration with the Lincoln Mint was pivotal in his career, transforming his pictorial visions into “tactile sculptures” and elevating jewelry to the status of conceptual art. This medallion is, in essence, a surrealist amulet that captures Dalí’s obsession with the fourth dimension and modern spirituality.
