Fifth volume of "The Physical World", dedicated to meteorology. Amédée Guillemin was a French science writer and journalist. Guillemin began his studies at the University of Beaune and obtained his degree in Paris. Between 1850 and 1860 he taught mathematics at a private school, during which time he wrote critical articles for the liberal press on the French Second Empire. In 1860, he moved to Chambéry where he became junior editor of the weekly political journal La Savoie. After the annexation of Savoy by the French Empire, he returned to Paris where he became scientific editor of l'Avenir national. Guillemin started as a writer of books on physics and astronomy, which were very popular. He wrote "The Sky" which was translated into many languages. His most important work, "The Physical World", consisted of five large volumes. His publisher, Hachette, urged him to write a series of booklets on astronomy and physics entitled "Small popular encyclopaedia", an accessible collection on the sciences and their applications. French astronomer Jacques Crovisier of the Observatoire de Paris believes that Guillemin may have been a source of inspiration for Jules Verne's novel, From the Earth to the Moon (1865).
