"The Atmosphere" by Camille Flammarion is a meteorology book originally published in 1871, describing meteorological phenomena and climate. The work was very popular and had several editions, including one in Spanish published in 1875 and another revised in 1902, the latter (in two volumes) being the one we are bidding for. The so-called Flammarion Engraving, a famous illustration that appeared in "L'Atmosphère", has been used on many occasions to represent the discovery of astronomy by man.
Camille Flammarion was a French astronomer known for his works popularizing astronomy. Camille was the brother of Ernest Flammarion (1846-1936), founder of the French publishing group Groupe Flammarion. He began his career as an astronomer in 1858 as a collaborator of the Paris Observatory. In 1883 he founded an astronomical observatory in Juvisy-sur-Orge: it consisted of a 240 mm diameter achromatic refractor installed under a metal dome 5 meters in diameter, a huge library and a wall quadrant. In 1887 he founded the French Astronomical Society (Société astronomique de France), of which he was the first president, as well as being the founder and editor of the journal L'Astronomie, which from 1887, served to disseminate the bulletins of the SAF. Flammarion was the first to suggest the current names of Triton, satellite of Neptune, and Amalthea, moon of Jupiter, although these names would only be officially accepted several decades later. His numerous observations of Mars gave him the honor of naming one of its craters after him, called Flammarion. Likewise, the lunar crater Flammarion and the lunar rhyme Flammarion are named in his honor. Among the many honors he received during his lifetime was the decoration of the Legion of Honor in 1912 for his work in popularizing astronomy.
"La astronomía popular", also published by Montaner y Simón (1901) includes: El Telescopio Moderno, including the most modern discoveries and illustrations. The author is Augusto Arcimís, Sevillian scientist, amateur astronomer and the first professional meteorologist in Spain.
