François Édouard Joachim Coppée was a French poet, playwright and novelist of Parnassianism. Coppée was the popular and sentimental poet of Paris and its suburbs, of intimate street scenes of the world of the humble. A poet of sadness at the death of birds in winter ("La Mort des oiseaux"), of the memory of a first love encounter ("Septembre, au ciel léger"), of nostalgia for another existence ("Je suis un pâle enfant du vieux Paris") or of the beauty of twilight ("Le cruscule est triste et doux"), he had great popular success. His first printed verses date from 1864. They were republished with others in 1866 in the form of a collection (Le Reliquaire), followed (1867) by Intimités and Poèmes modernes (1867-1869). In 1869, his first play, Le Passant, was received with great success at the Odéon theater, followed by Fais ce que dois (1871) and Les Bijoux de la délivrance (1872), short dramas in verse inspired by the war, which were widely applauded. His poem Le Défilé was dedicated to his sister Annette in 1869. He published Les Humbles (1872), Le Cahier rouge (1874), Olivier (1875) and L'Exilée (1876). The Académie française awarded him the Prix Vitet in 1876 for his poetic work.
