This facsimile faithfully reproduces a unique manuscript of the Apocalypse, whose original version is kept in the Bibliothèque nationale de France. It is an exceptional testimony within the medieval iconographic tradition, notable for the presence of visual elements unusual in this type of codex, particularly those that precede the rise of the style developed by Jan van Eyck and his contemporaries. The richness of its pictorial program, which combines a visionary narrative with an innovative symbolic approach for its time, makes it a piece of high historical and artistic value.
The identity of both the promoter of the "Flemish Apocalypse" and the artists who executed it remains unknown. However, the analysis of its textual, stylistic and technical features allows us to situate its origin in the artistic environment of Flanders at the beginning of the 15th century.
One of the most remarkable elements of the manuscript is the remarkable inventiveness displayed by the illuminators in shaping an extensive and ambitious visual program. The iconographic coherence and symbolic depth perceived throughout the whole suggest the intervention or advice of a theologian in its conception. Each illustrated folio articulates a dense and carefully constructed narrative, where image and text intertwine to offer a complex and structured visual interpretation of the apocalyptic content.
