Exceptional facsimile of the famous Byzantine manuscript Ilias Picta, also known as the Illustrated Iliad, one of the first graphic testimonies of the Homeric tradition. The original, dated in the 5th century and preserved in the Biblioteca Ambrosiana in Milan, consists of 51 illustrated folios with 58 scenes depicting episodes from the Iliad, accompanied on the back by fragments of the original Greek text.
Published by Grail Editions in 2009, this edition reproduces with absolute fidelity the miniatures, calligraphy and structure of the original codex. Each illustration preserves the narrative force of the classical model, reflecting the synthesis between pictorial art and epic literature typical of the late Antique world.
The edition includes a study volume by Dr. Enrique Celis Real, PhD in Classical Philology, which contextualizes the manuscript historically, literary and visually, unraveling both its symbolism and its relevance within the classical iconographic tradition.
The set is presented in a careful binding in simile parchment, with protective case and high quality materials, which makes this work a jewel for bibliophiles, researchers of the classical world and collectors of ancient codices.
