La Cenerentola is a comic opera by Gioachino Rossini, composed in 1817 from a realistic version of the Cinderella story, without magical elements. Written in just three weeks, it incorporates recycled music and was conceived as a moral and political guide through art. Although its premiere in Rome was initially poorly received, it soon became an international success.
The work presents great vocal demands, especially for the protagonist, Angelina, and is notable for its brilliant writing for the voice. During the 19th century it was very popular, although it fell into disuse due to the lack of suitable contraltos. Since the mid-twentieth century it has been successfully revived by leading mezzo-sopranos and today remains one of the most performed operas in the Rossini repertoire.
